What really happened to Junior Pope?
According to the International Centre for Investigative Reports (ICIR), Nigeria has witnessed waves of fatal boat accidents in recent years. With 1,204 fatalities between January 2018 and October 2023, data collated by the ICIR reveals the grim reality facing the nation’s waterways. Applying the necessary safety measures could have saved the vast majority. In 2023, an unprecedented 284 people lost their lives in boat accidents.
Â
An average of 17 people die monthly from boat mishaps. The recurrence of this tragedy emphasises the gravity of the situation. While the government is pivotal in ensuring our waters’ safety, one could argue even further that providing proper ferries should be the government’s responsibility when one is not feasible. Also, it should have policies to enforce health and safety regulations, as most accidents occur due to non-adherence to essential maritime safety measures.Â
Â
Here are some safety measures to ensure a safe boat trip:
- Always wear a properly fitted life jacket.
- Â Inspect the boat. Before departure, conduct a thorough inspection of the boat, checking for signs of damage, leaks, or mechanical issues.
- Familiarise yourself with local maritime rules and regulations before setting sail. Understand speed limits, navigation rules, and designated corridors to avoid accidents.
- Â Assign a trained and certified skipper to ensure your safety and navigation. The skipper should be sober, attentive, and capable of making sound emergency decisions.
- Stay vigilant and maintain situational awareness. Look for other boats, navigational hazards, and changing weather conditions.
- Educate all passengers onboard the boat, especially children and inexperienced boaters, about basic safety procedures and expectations. Please encourage them to remain seated while underway, avoid dangling limbs over the side, and avoid engaging in risky maneuvers that could jeopardize their safety.
- Â Plan and prepare for emergencies. Have a well-stocked first aid kit, emergency supplies, and a float plan that outlines your itinerary.
- Â Avoid overcrowding. A canoe or a small boat should seat at most four people, and passenger luggage should be at most 5kg. Also, ensure that the boat has weight equilibrium.
Â
Following these essential safety measures and remaining vigilant while sailing can minimise risks and allow everyone involved to enjoy a safe and memorable boating experience. Be reminded that safety is everyone’s responsibility, so prioritise caution and respect for the waterways to ensure a smooth sailing experience.Â
