Finidi to lead the Super Eagles in March friendlies

 

The Super Eagles have arrived at their camp in anticipation of the upcoming friendly encounter against Ghana on Friday, March 22.

They uploaded a video on their official platform on Tuesday, showing athletes casually walking by the camera to signal their arrival.Finidi George will lead the technical crew of the Super Eagles for this friendly encounter.

The 52-year-old ex-Ajax Amsterdam (the Netherlands) and Real Betis (Spain) winger began his career with Nigeria in a qualification match for the Africa Cup of Nations against Burkina Faso at the National Stadium in Lagos on July 27, 1991.

In his debut in 1991, George, who had previously played for Calabar Rovers and Sharks FC in Nigeria before moving to Europe, scored one goal and provided four assists for the renowned Rashidi Yekini.

He also assisted Yekini in scoring Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA World Cup goal against Bulgaria in Dallas, USA, on June 19, 1994. George’s goal secured Nigeria’s first-ever qualification for the FIFA World Cup finals when he gave Nigeria the lead against Algeria in a key qualifier at Algiers on October 8, 1993. The match concluded with a final score of 1-1, securing Nigeria’s qualification for the finals in America.

 

George hails from a lineage of accomplished football players, with his elder brother Alari and younger brother Igeniwari being well-established athletes.

He served as the assistant of Portuguese coach José Santos Peseiro, who guided the Eagles to second place in the 34th Africa Cup of Nations in Cote d’Ivoire earlier in the year.

He held the role of first assistant coach for a duration of 21 months.
