NLC rejects Abure’s re-election

The leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress has said that they would neither acknowledge nor provide any kind of acknowledgment to Julius Abure, the National Chairman of the Labour Party, after his re-election.

During a national convention on Wednesday in Nnewi, Anambra State, the party reappointed Abure as its national chairman.

All members of the National Working Committee also attended the conference.

However, neither the NLC nor the Trade Union Congress filled the positions for delegates. In response to the convention’s result, Benson Upah, the spokesperson for the NLC, declared that the Congress will never support the party as long as Abure remains in a leadership position.

Upah described the convention as a sham and stated that the return of the national chairman is considered invalid by the NLC.

He stated that it is an act that is unlawful and without legal force. The entire endeavour was a deceptive act! No justification can validate such audacious disregard for the law.

Abure and Joe Ajaero, the head of the NLC, have been in a persistent conflict.

Several prominent members of the labour union, including the NLC youth leader, have strongly criticised the convention. The NLC youth leader spoke on AIT Network News at 8 p.m. on Wednesday and denounced the convention as illegitimate and unlikely to withstand judicial scrutiny.

Prior to this, the NLC demanded the resignation of Abure from his position as party chairman and the prompt establishment of a caretaker transition committee to arrange a lawful and all-encompassing national convention

for the party.
