Federal Government approves 300% electricity hike

The Federal Government has authorized a rise in power costs for households classified as Band A.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) made this ruling.

The head of the commission, Sanusi Garba, added his signature to the paper titled “Eligible Customer Regulations 2024,” thus granting his approval.

The 36-page document covers several elements of the interaction between customers and energy distribution firms.

It consists of 14 chapters that address a wide range of concerns, including metering, supplier of last resort, rates, and others.A significant number of individuals, especially those in the Band A Customers category, expect the DISCOS (distribution companies) to enhance their supply and overall service in response to the Federal Government’s approval of the increase.

Starting on April 1, 2024, power distribution companies (DisCos) will have the authority to increase energy rates for urban users from N68 to N225 ($0.15) per kilowatt-hour.Nevertheless, Oseni asserted that the rate hike will just impact 15 percent of the nation’s electrical consumers.
