Africa, a continent inhabited by more than one billion people, is home to some of the world’s poorest countries, which are plagued by frequent famines, civil wars, and human rights abuses.
Considering Africa’s historical experience of colonial subjugation, it may be hastily assumed that the colonialists(Westerners) bear sole responsibility for the continent’s current state. However, almost half the world was invaded or colonized at one point; one country having vassal control over another isn’t anything new and cannot apply as many developed and prosperous countries today, such as the United States, India, Japan, and many others, were at one point vassal states themselves and/or had their undertakings influenced by a more powerful state. A comparative examination of the aforementioned countries proves that the presumption of colonial influence and subjugation as a reason for Africa’s underdevelopment does not withstand scrutiny.
